Dashboards Tell You What. Orion Tells You Why: Now Available in ChatGPT

Every business relies on dashboards to track performance. But dashboards only show you what happened. When revenue drops or churn ticks up, the person who owns that number needs to know why, and finding the answer usually means filing a ticket with the data team and waiting.

While many are turning to standalone AI tools to query their data, this often leads to a new problem: everyone gets a slightly different answer.

Today, we are bridging that gap. Orion by Gravity is now officially available as a plugin in ChatGPT.

Anyone at a company running Orion can now simply type @Orion into ChatGPT to ask why a number moved. In seconds, they receive an accurate narrative answer pulled directly from their company's data warehouse. This response is built entirely on the governed metric definitions their data team already maintains in LookML or dbt.

“Teams move faster when they don’t have to guess why a metric changed. Bringing Orion into ChatGPT gives everyone instant answers backed by the data team’s single source of truth.”

Arpan Shah, General Manager, Technology at OpenAI

From the Definition to the "Why"

To see how this works in practice, consider a finance manager reviewing weekly revenue reporting. Before digging into a sudden drop in metrics, they want to ensure they are looking at the right data parameters.

Inside ChatGPT, the manager asks:
@Orion how do we define total revenue?

Orion returns the governed definition directly from the company's semantic layer: Total revenue is the sum of order totals, measured when customers place their orders. The answer cites the exact source and the data owner.

With the groundwork laid, the manager asks the question that matters most:
@Orion why did it increase last week?

Orion runs a deep analysis across the company's warehouse and returns a clear, narrative answer. Rather than returning a spreadsheet, Orion details the exact percentage increase and pinpoints the specific regional shifts and discount promotions that accounted for the change. The user can keep asking follow up questions in the same chat or click a link in Orion’s answer to open the full, detailed analysis within the platform.

Beyond investigating metric changes, teams can also use the plugin to monitor KPIs for anomalies, trigger scheduled reporting workflows right in the chat, and search the Orion wiki for vital business context like metric caveats or past decisions.

What Makes Orion by Gravity Different?

Bring your own semantic layer. The data team only needs to maintain metric logic once in LookML or dbt. Orion writes the SQL from those exact definitions, ensuring a question asked in ChatGPT gets the exact same answer as your primary dashboard.

One source of truth, regardless of the assistant. These definitions carry over into ChatGPT, Codex, Claude, Cursor, and Gemini Enterprise. Everyone gets the same number, no matter which assistant they prefer to use.

Built for the "Why." Many data plugins simply translate natural language into SQL. Orion goes further: it keeps definitions current, detects anomalies, runs scheduled workflows, and is fundamentally engineered to investigate why a metric changed and explain it in plain English. Through it all, the data team stays in control. Users authenticate with their own Orion accounts and only see the projects they are authorized to view.

Under the Hood: How It Works

Orion connects to ChatGPT through a remote MCP server, meaning there is zero installation required. Users simply sign in using standard OAuth, and Orion automatically maps them to their company via their email domain.

Once connected, ChatGPT is equipped with specialized Orion tools for reading data and taking action. To keep your data safe, each tool signals to ChatGPT whether it is a read or write action, prompting ChatGPT to ask the user for confirmation before executing changes. Every query runs securely in Orion against the customer's own warehouse, including BigQuery, Snowflake, Databricks, Redshift, and more.

Get Started with Orion in ChatGPT

The Orion plugin is available today for all users with an active Orion account.

Because enterprise workspaces turn off new plugins by default, a workspace admin must first enable Orion in the workspace plugin settings. Next, open the ChatGPT plugin directory, search for Orion, and add it to your workspace. ChatGPT will prompt you to sign in using your Orion credentials. To verify the connection, simply type @Orion list my projects in a chat, and Orion will return all the projects your account has permission to view.

Ready to uncover the "why" behind your metrics? Install the Orion plugin in ChatGPT today, or book a demo with the Orion by Gravity team to see it in action.
